Dans Bulusma (Dance Meeting) in Istanbul

Projects
Feraye (Contemporary Dance)

As one of the oldest male dances of the Aegean coast, the Feraye dance offers a brand-new approach with the commentary of three female dancers of Dans Buluþma-Ýstanbul (Dance Gathering-Istanbul).

Originally Feraye is a requiem cried out against the honor killing tradition and is performed by the male in Aegean coast. It is an ironic expression of a reaction directed against a male-dominant world and honor killings. The dance will be performed by three female dancers in context of a festival.

CHOREOGRAPH: Aytül Hasaltun. She was graduated from Istanbul Technical University’s Turkish Music and State Conservatory Turkish Folk Dances; in 1992 Aytül met Christine Brodbeck and Mustafa Kaplan, thanks to whom she stepped into contemporary dance world; Aytül has been carrying on her contemporary dance works and studies in Dans Buluþma-Ýstanbul which she founded in the August of 2002.

Workshops
Dance and Photography Workshop
“Dance is motion, motion is everything. All that exists is in a motion.”

Out in the nature, the human being doesn’t carry on a life particularly of its own; on the contrary, his/her life also includes the social and cultural impacts of the given age, a life that offers these impacts among its productions. The development of mutually interacting events and distinct ways of life altogether bring about a continually changing world, and therefore a continual creativity.

We will be handling contact and improvised dance works. The workshop will focus on the interaction among the bodies and group works, and as the final activity, it will, together with all the participants, perform a studio show in Dans Buluþma-Ýstanbul on 21st October 15.00 pm. We will also be together in context of Tunnel Festival, in order to coexist and search for the relationship of the body with body, relationship of body with gravity and the fiction. The workshop has also been designed for the photographers of all kinds. Recognizing the significance of inter-disciplinary works, DANS BULUÞMA is in search of the photography of the motion by combining the dance and the photography. We encourage those photographers who wish to take the photos of the dance, who wish to eternalize the motion and then multiply it as much as they desire, to participate our workshop. The works of the photographers shall be exhibited on a street exhibition during the festival.

PROGRAMME: Technical work 13th to 17th October, from 11.00 am to 12.30 midday / from 13.00 pm to 14.30 pm Contact and improvisation / from 15.00 pm to 17.00 pm repertoire. Participation is subject to charge, student discount will be applied. Dead line for registration is 11th October 2003, 19.00 pm.

Sirtaki (Khasapiko Argos) / By Cemal Atila

Mondays: 19.00 – 29.30 pm

A Dance originating from the ancient Constantinopolis

The Sirtaki dance was born from Khasapiko Argos, a dance performed at butcher guilds in ancient Constantinopolis during the Byzance era. Khasapiko Argos was popular till the beginning of 1900, but from then on it fell from the favor and went into a long-lasting silence. By the beginning of the 1950s, when the Greek composers like Theodorakis and Hatzidakis started to comment the traditional Greek music anew, the Khasapiko Argos has once again appeared on the scene, this time quite far away from Constantinopolis, among the Greek diaspora in France and with a new name; Sirtaki. Soon after reincarnating in France, the Sirtaki quickly spread back to Greece and other parts of the world. Although it has quite a number of traditional motives, many art critics consider Sirtaki as a semi-traditional and semi-modern dance.

Contemporary Dance / By Stephanie Parent
Tuesdays: 17.30 pm to 19.00 pm

Stephanie Parent has studied stage arts and has personally developed herself during her various journeys both in contemporary dance and in the field of theatre. She also participated the classes of post-grado, a dance and artistic expression expert in Corogne University. While in Spain, she performed with Druida Dance Company in Galice and Catalonia (Barcelona) and she worked as a choreographer for the Cofraida Artistica Dance Company.

She started a collective project, the “ninguem project.” This project, including six musicians, two painters and two dancer-comedians, has gone on tour for one year. Combining many artistic branches, this professional group has produced one disk and one Balkan stage project. “Projecto ninguem” has been commented on by El Pais, a daily newspaper in Spain, as a “work of significant emphasize, lively and full of inspiring ideas.” In Spain, Stephanie has also worked on contact dance, improvised dance and choreography with Chevy Muraday from Losdedae Dance Company who played an important role in her dance education. She has carried on these works regularly in Spain and Turkey. She has carried out extensive works; with Frances Bravo and Tomeu Gomilla on Butho, with Julio Viera from Diez y Diez (Madrid) Dance Company on body-mind method and with Mita Adriana Beutel (Brasil) on rhythm and bodial awareness. At the same time she instructed lessons at Santiago Compostella Santart Art And Drama School as a guest teacher.

She has educated dancers in Middle East Technical University for two years and has carried out three choreographies with them which were performed in various festivals. Her latest work, the “furniture” was staged in Semaver Company in 2003 in Ýstanbul.

In her lessons, not only in the technical sense, but also in the creative sense Stephanie adopts a very open-minded approach. Be it personal warm-up (floor or bar work, butho plus physical) or group work (contact, semi-contact), the main objective of her lessons is to enable the participant to discover his/her original choreographical form and aesthetic sense. Certain objects which will spoil or supplement the space will be among the topics of the workshops. At the same time, some other basic expressional objects of the dance, such as the center, breath and energy directed motion, the awareness of self-body and other-body and the reflection of the movement will also be studied.
