Gonen’s history begins with its spas.

The city owes its development and its current economic position to its spas. The spas whose history goes back to the IV^th century B.C. and which are also used by Alexandre the Great, Byzantines and the Romans continued to be famous during the Ottoman period also. The hammam with a historical dome, which is also called ‘the bath’ by the local people, still exists as a historical monument today.

The characteristics of the Spa Water

The medical research’s results found out by the Medecine Faculty of Istanbul on the mineral water of the Gonen Spa is as following:

The Gonen Spa’s very hot water enters in the category of  bitter mineral waters. Due to its total mineralization concentration over 2 gr, especially when used as drinking water, it is accepted that it has a positive impact on some of the kidney’s and biliary ways’ complications. When used as bath water, it has good impacts on rheumatistic syndromes, fractions, post-operation periods, aches and motor difficulties related with the locomotor system, painful and infectuous women diseases and large intestin’s infections. Moreover, these waters are assumed to accelerate the blood flow and increase its movement capacity by cleaning the fat accumulated in the blood. Thus, the cure can serve for the rectification of vein hardness (arteriosclerosis), the treatment of vascular and neurologic complications, and the avoidance of these disorders for middle aged people.

Between the dates 28 April and 1 May in 1979, there had been a big panel in the Gonen Spa whose subject was: ‘The Locomotor System’s and Various Diseases’ Spa Treatments’. The Gonen Spa received 8 notifications of good treatment. In these notifications, the positive impacts of the spa and the water’s characteristics  are explained with details.
